How is consulting different from coaching?

Consulting focuses on coupling fresh eyes and years of organizational development experience to find solutions. Coaching focuses on laser directed questions to the client so the client can discover the solution themselves. There is value in both. Sometimes consulting is needed to find the global solution. Then coaching is engaged so the client can discover the specific solutions applicable to their situation. Most frequently Mark uses a combination of both.

Coaching focuses on the action necessary to move clients from where they are to where they want to be. Coaching brings the present and future into focus as the client discovers the gap between them and how to close it. Therapy, sometimes necessary, focuses on past hurts and disappointments that continue to prohibit a healthy lifestyle. Some coaches are licensed therapist with experience in therapy. Mark is a coach with a background in consulting.

How long does the coaching take?

It routinely takes two to three sessions to achieve short term goals. The larger initiatives will accordingly take longer. The client will look at behavior patterns, limiting beliefs, and what different behaviors are necessary to reaching identified goals. Mark offers complimentary initial coaching sessions. In that session the client will gain a good idea of the commitment necessary to achieve the desired results.
