In a recent discussion surrounding the life of the biblical figure Nehemiah, a few timeless lessons leapt to the forefront of application. Nehemiah, a servant cupbearer to the king of Persia, entered the king’s presence with such a grief stricken heart, his countenance was unmistakable. Nehemiah couldn’t hide his sadness.

His broken heart was the result of hearing that the great city of Jerusalem lay in ruins. The walls had been destroyed and the city plundered. Confronted by the king at his outward appearance, the subsequent events reveal lessons for all aspiring leaders.

Ask for what you need.

Nehemiah wanted the wall rebuilt. So he asked the king to send him, a servant, to rebuild the city. With that request granted he asked for more, letters of safe passage through hostile territories. That granted he asked for more, wood from the king’s forests as building materials.

Nehemiah was specific for what he needed. He was prepared in his ask. He knew what it would take to succeed.

Know who you are asking.

As cupbearer, Nehemiah most likely knew how to read the king. Nehemiah was aware his king possessed the power to grant his requests. He also knew the king could provide the resources necessary for the completion of the task. Jerusalem was not only a great city. Nehemiah’s family were buried there. His ancestral significance depended upon the city being rebuilt and tombs restored.

Nehemiah could have been rejected by the king. Rejection would have meant prison or death. This was a hill he was prepared to die on. His risk was great because the reward was great. Although a servant, Nehemiah had favor with the king because, in Nehemiah’s words, “the good hand of my God was on me”. Nehemiah 2:8

Utilize what you ask for.

Asking and receiving was just the beginning for Nehemiah. Resources granted, obstacles and opposition were still present. With great persistence Nehemiah steadily labored to rebuild the wall around the city of Jerusalem.
